Logline

When a charismatic Broadway performer with terminal cancer secretly uses an annual tradition—the "red card"—to gather his closest friends for one final week in the mountains, he challenges them to confront their deepest fears while creating lasting memories, ultimately teaching them how to live fully even as he prepares to say goodbye.

Synopsis

Jordan Paxton, a vibrant 38-year-old Broadway performer and activist, receives devastating news: he has an aggressive brain tumor with only months to live.

Rather than immediately telling his three closest friends, Jordan invokes their long-standing "red card" tradition—where once a year, each friend can compel the others to participate in an adventure of their choosing, no questions asked.

Under the guise of this tradition, Jordan gathers his friends at a remote mountain cabin for what they believe is just another getaway. What they don't realize is that Jordan has designed a series of personal challenges intended to help each of them face their deepest fears before he reveals his diagnosis.

As the week unfolds, each friend confronts their personal demons: Duncan, a therapist, must face the water after a traumatic lifeguarding incident; Aspen must acknowledge her longing to abandon her "perfect" life for Barcelona; and Mike must overcome his paralyzing fear of spiders.

When Jordan finally reveals his terminal diagnosis, the shock transforms into a profound celebration of life and friendship. The group creates a "non-bucket list" of experiences to share before Jordan's time runs out.

One year later, the three friends return to the cabin for a celebration of Jordan's life, where letters he wrote before his death reveal his lasting impact on each of their lives—proving that his legacy lives on in how they now approach life with newfound courage.

Writer's Statement

When Gavin Creel's light went out in the fall of 2024, I felt a little less whole. I had never met Gavin, but his profound impact on the community of which I am a part will live on eternally.

The Red Card is a love letter to friendship, to theater, and to living fully in the face of mortality. While the subject matter includes terminal illness, this is not a film about dying—it's a film about truly living.

I'm drawn to this story because it examines how we often need permission—a "red card"—to be our most authentic selves. Each character embodies a different fear that holds us back from living honestly: fear of the past, fear of change, fear of inadequacy.

Visually, the film balances intimacy with theatricality, reflecting Jordan's Broadway-based background. The cabin serves as both sanctuary and stage where our characters perform until they finally drop their masks.

My approach prioritizes authentic performances, natural dialogue, and finding the delicate balance between humor and heartbreak that makes life—and this story—beautiful.
